This unit will combine two core content areas for an 11th grade classroom: American Literature and US History. The unit will also integrate a cooperative learning activity, service learning activity, and VAPA elements. The topic of the Vietnam War is an important area of study that should be covered from both a historical and literary perspective. To this day the Vietnam War remains controversial. A focused examination of the era allows students to wrestle with questions such as, the morality of war, the cost of war, and do actions have consequences.
In History, students will examine primary source documents to analyze the consequences of the Vietnam War both foreign and domestic.
In English, students will examine the cost of the war on individual soldiers through reading letters of soldiers and Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried.
As educators, we look forward to exposing our students to an forgotten war that is often looked over.
